How WhatsApp Broadcast Works for Businesses

A practical explanation of WhatsApp broadcast for business messaging — templates, audiences, consent and response handling.

App broadcast vs API broadcast

The WhatsApp Business App has a basic broadcast feature limited to contacts saved in your phone. The WhatsApp Business API broadcast (used with Ommly) has no such limitation and supports larger opted-in audiences, approved templates and structured reply handling.

How API broadcast works

A broadcast is a one-to-many send where each recipient receives an individual private message — not a group message. Recipients cannot see other recipients. Replies come back as individual conversations.

What you need for a broadcast

  • An opted-in contact list (consent is mandatory).
  • An approved WhatsApp message template.
  • A connected WhatsApp Business API account.

Reply handling

Unlike email campaigns, WhatsApp broadcasts generate real replies. Each reply is a new conversation in your Ommly team inbox. Plan your team capacity to handle inbound volume from campaign replies.
